How to pick up your car at Barcelona airport

Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat airport has two terminals, T1 and T2, and there are rental companies at both. The desks are in the arrivals area and you collect the car from the parking garage of the same terminal.

The two terminals are several kilometers apart, so check your voucher carefully to see which one your rental company is in. If your flight lands at the other one, there's a free shuttle bus between terminals that takes a few minutes.

One thing we get asked a lot: we don't offer a meet-and-greet service at the terminal door. We only work with official rental companies, which is what guarantees the car is there, the contract is right and you have backup if something goes wrong.

Picking up in the city: Sants station

You don't need a car to get around Barcelona: the center is walkable, and the metro and buses go everywhere. That's why many travelers are better off picking up the car on the day they leave the city.

The most practical option is Barcelona Sants train station, where several rental companies have offices. It's well connected to the airport and to the main highways without crossing the center, and it saves you rental days and parking.

What you need to pick up the car

Three things, and all three are mandatory. Without any one of them, the rental company won't hand over the car.

A credit card in the main driver's name. That's where the rental company blocks the security deposit. Debit cards, cash and a family member's card are not accepted.

A physical, valid driver's license. Digital licenses, photos and copies don't count. It has to be the card itself, valid for the whole rental.

A valid passport. The minimum age is 19, although it can vary by rental company or car category, and drivers under 25 pay a young driver surcharge. There's no maximum age. That's why we ask for the driver's age before quoting.

In Spain you don't need an International Driving Permit: your license from home is enough.

The low emission zone and the city center

Barcelona and several surrounding towns have a low emission zone (ZBE), where only cars with an environmental label can circulate. Rental cars are usually new and comply, but if you're unsure we'll confirm it with the rental company.

Even so, driving in the center isn't a good idea. The Gothic Quarter, El Born and much of Ciutat Vella have narrow, pedestrian or restricted-access streets, and traffic in the Eixample is heavy, with lots of traffic lights, bus lanes and scooters everywhere.

If your hotel is in the center, ask beforehand whether it has a garage. Fines for entering where you shouldn't reach the rental company weeks later, and it charges them to your card with an admin fee.

Parking in Barcelona

Parking in Barcelona is expensive and hard. On the street almost everything is paid parking: there are visitor zones with a time limit and resident zones where visitors can stay only briefly or not at all. You pay at the meter or with the official app.

For overnight or several hours, the easiest option is a public parking garage or the hotel's garage. If you'll spend a few days in the city without using the car, that's money you can save by picking it up later.

Watch out for visible belongings

Break-ins on parked cars are common in Barcelona, especially in tourist areas, viewpoints and beach parking lots. Rental cars are easy to spot and a frequent target.

The rule is simple: leave nothing in sight, no suitcases, no backpacks, no phone charging. If you have to leave luggage, put it in the trunk before you arrive, not in the parking lot. And be wary if someone waves you down saying you have a flat tire: pull over at a gas station or somewhere with people around.

Day trips from Barcelona

The car really pays off when you leave the city. Less than an hour away you have Sitges, with its beach and old town, and Montserrat, the mountain monastery: the road up is winding and the parking at the top fills up early on weekends.

The Costa Brava, to the north, is perfect for a few days: Tossa de Mar, Calella de Palafrugell, Cadaqués and medieval villages like Pals or Besalú. There's also Girona, Figueres with the Dalí museum and, to the south, Tarragona and the Penedès wine region.

Many highways in Catalonia stopped charging tolls in recent years, but some roads and tunnels still do, payable at the booth by card. The electronic toll device is an optional extra at the counter and usually not needed for a tourist trip.

If you want to cross into France

Southern France is close: Collioure, Perpignan or Carcassonne work as a day trip or with one night away. Let us know when you book if you'll cross the border. Your advisor confirms the rental company allows it, has it written into the contract and tells you whether there's a fee for leaving Spain.

If you want to end your trip in another city, like Madrid, Seville or Paris, you can also drop the car off there. The rental company charges a one-way fee, higher if it's in another country. We include it in your quote.

Which category to choose and the most expensive mistakes

For two people, a compact: easy to park and it fits the narrow streets of the coastal villages. For four with big suitcases, a midsize or a station wagon, because the trunks of small European cars are a surprise. For groups, a minivan. Most cars are manual: if you want an automatic, ask for it from your first message. We guarantee the category, not the exact model.

Putting in the wrong fuel. Pumps say gasolina (unleaded 95 or 98) and gasóleo or diesel. Check the fuel cap before filling up.

Returning the car without a full tank. The rental company charges for missing fuel at a much higher price than a gas station.

Signing for extras without looking. Whatever you sign for at the counter (roadside assistance, GPS, toll pass, child seat) is paid there and isn't refundable. If something doesn't match your booking, message us before you sign.

And remember that fines and tolls are on you even if they arrive after you return the car: the rental company charges them to your card and adds an admin fee.
